The district conventions for '07 have commenced as of this weekend. Just wondering if anyone out there has any great stories to tell about it yet. Anyone know the new releases? Any funny/interesting stuff from the drama? This is my first time missing a convention, I don't want to go, but I still want to know the "highlights".

Creationism hiding in plain sight
by FireNBandits ina friend pointed out to me that "theistic evolution" is, in essence, no different than intelligent design.
both postulate a creator that is behind creation.
both use the words "creation" and "creator.

FireNBandits: I think you misunderstood me. I was trying to say that God has been subjected to empirical tests and the tests have all turned up negative. So, when someone says that God is outside the realm of science, they are not entirely correct. You said "Show me this god raising the dead, healing people, etc. GIVE ME EMPIRICAL DATA that demonstrates the prayers you speak of are answered. You would need a cross section of people who did not pray about their problems and those who did, and then compare if there is a significant difference in the number of people whose problems were solved. Then you would need to interview each person to see if the problems were solved via natural means, or showed some sort of evidence of supernatural--in other words, nonhuman--intervention. There is no such study and the writer of that book you put so much stock in knows it." ...Exactly! Since empirically testable claims are made, they can be subjected to the scientific method. In every case (according to the book "God-the Failed Hypothesis", which I mentioned in my prior post), the results have turned up negative. You said: "Perhaps he is away and had to use the privy." Yeah, the book addresses that same argument. Perhaps God is sleeping/peeing/uninterested. But if that's the case, then he is irrelevent to our lives and unworthy of worship.

The Jeopardy thing is definitely false, for the simple reason that ALEX DOESN'T ASK ANY QUESTIONS! He provides answers, and contestants supply the questions.

FireNBandits, you said: "God cannot be chemically analysed, placed under a microscope, seen in a telescope, placed in a spectrometer, or addressed and tested in any way that science uses to know and understand. Even if there really is a God, God is outside the realm of science. God is not knowable via the scientific method".
I used to think the same thing, then I read "God: the Failed Hypothesis", by Victor Stenger. He manages to make some persuasive arguments that God can be tested (at least the Judeo-Christian God) scientifically, becuase people make empirical claims about Him. People claim that God answers their prayers, for instance, and so those things can be submitted to the scientific method.

What Freedoms Do You Enjoy Now That You're Not A Witness?
by minimus inthe watchtower scoffs at "apostates" because they want their "so-called freedom".
not practicing this religion does give you a lot of freedom and normalcy.
what freedoms do you cherish now?

I plced them inside a plastic bag, then inside another plastic bag, then placed them inside a wall of a room I was refinishing in my house. Spiritual food for the mice now.

Evolution and Homosexuality in species
by PopeOfEruke ini started wondering the other day how homosexuality could evolve in species, humans for example, assuming the main purpose of evolution and natural selection is for creatures to reproduce and pass on their genes to another generation.
obviously for natural selection to favour homosexuality there must be benefits to the species which outweigh the disadvantages of no/less reproduction patterns of homosexual members of the species.
i found an article that certainly offers some suggestions to solving the seeming "puzzle".

With regards non-human animals, isn't availability also a factor? For example, a zoo may have an enclosure with only male canaries. Since the drive to pair up and perform the act of sex is still there, some will become attracted to other males. ...Just a thought.

Hey, thanks so much Nathan Natas. I did not even know that a site like that existed. You were right about the slow downloading speed, but I just started it going and then when I just came back to my computer it was done. The scan is a very good quality and it's exactly what I needed. So, thanks again!

Okay, a friend of mine who is still a Witness wrote to the Watchtower Society a few years ago asking questions about the flood. He showed me their response and I made a copy of it. I am trying to get a copy of all the articles that Watchtower references in their letter. So, I really want the article called "Noah's Passenger List", from 1951, regardless of whether the information has been repeated in more recent articles. I especially want to see if that article references other (non-Watchtower) sources and then I can research those too.
